faze

faze [ fayz ] (past and past participle fazed, present participle faz·ing, 3rd person present singular faz·es)

transitive verb
Definition:

fluster somebody: to disconcert or disturb somebody
Bad news doesn't seem to faze her.

[Mid-19th century. Variant of dialectal feeze "frighten" < Old English fēsian "drive away" < Germanic]

Spelling Note

faze or phase? Do not confuse the spelling of faze and phase, which sound similar. Faze is a verb meaning "disconcert": Don't be fazed by the size of the instruction manual. Phase, the more common word, can be used as a noun meaning "a stage of development," "an aspect," or as a verb meaning "do something in stages": It's just a phase he's going through. The old system is being phased out.
