1. outer layer of skin: the thin outermost layer of the skin, itself made up of several layers, that covers and protects the underlying dermis

2. zoology outer layer of invertebrates' cells: the outer layer of cells of invertebrates that secretes the protective waxy cuticle

3. botany outer cell layer of plant: the outermost layer of cells of a plant. In woody plants the epidermis is usually replaced by corky protective tissue periderm.
