Definition:
 
1. intransitive verb become involved superficially: to have a casual or superficial interest in something
He dabbled in local politics for a few years.

2. intransitive verb splash: to paddle, play, or splash in water

3. transitive verb dip something: to wet something by dipping it in a liquid
We sat by the pool, dabbling our feet in the water.

4. transitive verb splash something with liquid: to daub, splash, or spatter somebody or something with a liquid

5. intransitive verb zoology move under water for food: to move the bill to the bottom of shallow water in order to reach food ( refers to ducks )

[Mid-16th century. Probably < Dutch dabbelen "keep tapping" < dabben "to tap"]
