condole or console?
These words are easy to confuse because they are both connected with reassuring people in distress. The more common word is console, which takes an object and means "to provide comfort to somebody": She tried to console her father when his mother died.Condole is more formal and means "to express sympathy"; it does not take an object but uses with: She condoled with her father over the death of his mother.
