2. professional progress: somebody's progress in a chosen profession or during that person's working life

3. general progress: the general path or progress taken by somebody or something

4. rapid forward lurching motion: a rushing onward while lurching or swaying

Cultural Note

My Brilliant Career, a novel (1901) by Australian writer Miles Franklin. It is an account of a young girl's struggle to choose between an independent career and a comfortable life as the wife of a wealthy landowner. It was made into a movie directed by Gillian Armstrong in 1979.
