[15th century. Via French< Greek keration "fruit of the carob" < keras "horn"; because carob beans were used as standard weights for small quantities]

carat or carrot? Do not confuse the spelling of carat and carrot, which sound similar. The noun denoting a measure of precious stones or gold is spelled carat, as in 24-carat gold. The noun denoting the orange root vegetable, or the plant that produces it, is spelled carrot.
