noun  (plural back·grounds)
Definition:
 
1. personal circumstances and experiences: the personal circumstances and experiences that shape somebody's life, e.g. ethnic and social origins, upbringing, education, and work experience
a group of people from very different backgrounds

2. causes of event: the circumstances leading up to an event that explain its cause
The meeting takes place against a background of rising tension.

3. area behind something: the area that is behind something, forming the setting for it
