Definition:
 
1. give somebody task or duty: to give somebody a job to do
assign homework

2. send somebody to do something: to send somebody to work in a particular place or with a particular group of people
I assigned him to the maintenance department.

3. determine quality of something: to determine that somebody or something has a particular quality, name, use, or category
The words are assigned a rating based on frequency.

4. set something aside for something: to designate something for a particular use
The new radio station has been assigned a frequency by the authorities.

5. military order soldier: to put a soldier or military unit under a particular command

6. law transfer property: to transfer property or rights to another person by an official act

7. comput place value: to designate a value for a computer memory location corresponding to a named variable
