the ascent of Everest

Spelling Note

ascent or assent? Do not confuse the spelling of ascent and assent, which sound similar. Ascent is only used as a noun, denoting an upward movement or slope, as in the elevator's rapid ascent. Assent can be used as a noun or verb, referring to agreement or acceptance: She nodded in assent. He assented to our request.
