Definition:
 
1. intransitive verb formally request something: to make a formal, usually written, request for something
How do I apply for the job?

2. transitive verb use something: to make use of something to achieve a result
applied his first-aid skills to help the accident victims

3. intransitive verb be relevant: to be relevant to somebody or something
The requirement applies only if you are over 65.

4. transitive verb spread something: to spread a liquid or other material over a surface
Apply a thin layer of cream to the face and neck.

5. ap·ply your·self vr work hard: to work hard or spend a significant amount of time on something
