internecine

in·ter·nec·ine [ ìntər né sn, ìntər n sn ]

adjective
Definition:

1. involving conflict within group: relating to or involving conflict within a group or organization
an internecine feud

2. mutually destructive: damaging or injuring participants on both sides of a conflict

[Mid-17th century. < Latin internecinus "deadly" < internecare "exterminate," literally "kill completely" < necare "kill" < nex "death"]

Word History

The original meaning of internecine is "involving great slaughter." Its modern meaning of "involving conflict within a group," which can be traced back to the 18th century (Samuel Johnson in his Dictionary (1755) defined it as "endeavoring mutual destruction"), arose from the standard interpretation of inter- as "among, between," but in fact in the case of Latin internecinus it was being used simply to add emphasis.
