Joseph Stalin:
1879-1953 Georgian-born Soviet leader. He was the general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party (1922-1953). He ruled the former Soviet Union as a dictator after 1930, eliminating political opponents in a series of purges and causing nationwide famine with his collectivist agricultural policy.After World War II, he extended Soviet control over most of Eastern Europe.
