1791-1868 U.S. statesman and 15th president of the United States. A Federalist turned Democrat, he was a U.S. Representative (1821-1823), Senator (1834-1845), and secretary of state (1845-1849). During his presidency (1857-1861) he was unable to avert the Civil War (1861-1865).
