List of books formerly officially forbidden to members of the Roman Catholic Church. The name is Latin for “Index of Prohibited Books.” The process of condemning books and bringing the index up to date was carried out by a congregation of cardinals, consultors (religious advisers), and examiners from the 16th century until the list was abolished in 1966.
