Gunpowder Plot:
Conspiracy to kill James I, king of England, as well as the Lords and the Commons at the opening of Parliament on November 5, 1605. On that night Guy Fawkes, attempting to blow up Parliament, was caught in a cellar underneath the House of Lords and was arrested. After severe torture he disclosed the names of his accomplices, and with them he was hanged. The Gunpowder Plot is commemorated annually in the United Kingdom on November 5.
