Emancipation Proclamation:
On January 1, 1863 Abraham Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing slaves in Confederate-held territory. The Civil War (1861-1865) becomes a war to end slavery, strengthening the Union cause internationally and isolating the Confederacy. The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution will officially abolish slavery in 1865.
