Andrew Johnson:
1808-1875 U.S. statesman and 17th president of the United States. A Democrat, he was Abraham Lincoln’s vice president (1865), and succeeded to the presidency after Lincoln’s assassination in April 1865. As president (1865-1869), he survived an impeachment by Republicans opposed to his conciliatory Reconstruction policies.
